Working Women Demand Flexible Work More than Ever Before

Two years after the unfortunate event of the pandemic, we have yet to see the full impact it had on the global economy. One change is apparent though, and that is remote work opportunities.

More millennial women than ever before are seeking flexible or hybrid work environments. According to the article written by CNBC, “Of the more than 1,600 participants in the survey, theSkimm found that nearly two-thirds of millennial women prioritize remote work opportunities, including 43% who said remote work is extremely important moving forward and 22% who said they would no longer consider working for an employer if work-from-home wasn’t an option.”

The ability to work from home for many women during the COVID-19 pandemic was a literal lifeline for them and their families. Not only were they able to keep themselves and their families protected, but they were also given the opportunity to be around their family more, which was a huge plus. They had a great ability to cultivate the work-and-homelife balance.

Even after the lockdowns subsided, the desire for remote work continued to accelerate. Employees cite the reasons as being more time preservation during the day, more time around family, better health and wellbeing, etc.

Due to this, companies are now feeling the pressure to change their work environment and systems to appease employees who demand remote work, otherwise they risk losing their talent pool.

“I immediately turn down a job once I learn that it’s not fully remote or at least a mix of a hybrid-style work environment. I need this in order to fully care for my family,” says Shaad, a working mom of 3.

However, many women who worked in professional careers that are not able to foster a remote-and-hybird work environment — for example, jobs in the the medical field, teaching, and law, etc — are now pivoting their careers to an entirely new one in order to obtain that work-from-home lifestyle.

Career fields that are specifically sought out are mostly seen in the tech field. Being that tech is very inclusivity-based and flexible, many jobs are offered remotely from any part of the world.

“It’s starting to become extremely common that we’re seeing women who worked in the nursing field for 15+ years switching over to careers such as content strategist, information architectural designer, project management, et cetera, in the tech field because salaries are high and they’re offered fully remote,” says Jane, a professional UX researcher.

There’s no better time than now to shift your professional career into something that’s more malleable to your needs. However, the key is to do deep-dive research on what careers are centered around your needs so that it’s the right fit, and you’re not potentially wasting your time or hurting your current profession if you are someone that is pivoting and making a career change.
